Infection
Infection within the eye, or endophthalmitis is a potentially serious event which can be caused by cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange procedures. The reported rate across Europe varies from 1 case in 285 procedures (0.35%) to 1 in 2000 (0.05%) according to the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Mr Greenwood has performed in excess of six thousand five hundred cases and there has never been a case endophthalmitis.

Intraoperative complications
An audit of the previous 220 cases of cataract and refractive lens exchange procedures was conducted in March 2009. There were no intraoperative complications in this case series.

The most common intraoperative complication which can affect visual outcome after surgery is posterior capsule rupture, with or without vitreous loss. The recently published rate for this complication in the UK is 1.92% (national cataract dataset). There were no cases of this complication in this case series.

Visual outcome
For eyes without pre-existing disease, recently published data (national cataract dataset) reported that 51.0% achieved 6/6 (20/20) best-measured vision or better and 94.7% achieved 6/12 (20/40) vision, or better.

In the 220 case series audit (covering both cataract and refractive lens exchange procedures), 165 cases had no eye pre-existing eye disease. Of these cases, 72.1% achieved best-measured vision of 6/6 or better and 100% achieved 6/12 or better.
